The Wonder of Maha’ulepu Beach

Original oil painting by Eileen Kechloian 24″ by 30″ on canvas. Available.

This lovely beach located on the South Shore of Kaua’i is the most spectacular untouched beach. There is only one house on the entire beach, the Gillin House originally built in 1946. The sun rises behind Ha’upu Mountain and over the ocean lighting up the nooks and crannies of the Maha’ulepu Valley. My favorite spot to paint in the world is here on the cliffs overlooking the crashing waves, sandy beach, swaying palm trees, majestic mountain and fertile valley. When creating this oil painting, I wanted the viewer to see the glorious morning light on all the beauty that is Maha’ulepu. This is a new original and available to purchase by contacting the artist via email or by phone. backonisland@gmail.com

I painted this out at the ocean’s edge here on Kaua’i. I try to visit the ocean everyday, it is so powerful and energizing as well as breathtakingly beautiful. I enjoy watching the waves roll in. They are a difficult study as they don’t stand still for me to capture them like the trees and the mountains do. I try to take pictures in my mind so as to be able to translate them into my painting. If My mental picture doesn’t hold in my mind long enough to paint, I have to wait for another similar one to come along. The colors created by the light refraction in the wave are so fleeting. A picture taken with a camera can not do them justice. There are so many colors in shadows that the photograph will show as black, you have to catch the wave in your mind’s eye to truly do it any justice.
